The Irony Of Protesting Capitalism From Your Brand New iPhone

The Irony Of Protesting Capitalism From Your Brand New iPhone

There is a beautiful modern phenomenon happening right now. You can see it on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and sometimes at physical protests where people hold signs that say things like:

“Down with capitalism!”

And then, five minutes later, they use their iPhone to order Grab, pay with e-wallet, and upload a protest selfie using mobile data provided by a multinational telecommunications company listed on the stock market.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Olympics of irony.

Now before anyone gets emotional, relax. This is not a defense of capitalism, socialism, or any -ism. This is just an observation about human behavior — specifically, our incredible ability to complain about a system while fully enjoying the benefits of that same system.

Modern protesting sometimes feels like this:

  • Protest capitalism
  • Using iPhone
  • Wearing Nike
  • Drinking Starbucks
  • Posting on Instagram
  • Using Canva to design protest poster
  • Taking e-hailing home
  • Uploading TikTok: “Smash the system!”

All funded, powered, and enabled by… the system.

It’s like biting the hand that feeds you, but first asking the hand to hold your phone so you can record the video.

The irony is not small. The irony is XL size with extra cheese.

Let’s be honest. Most people don’t actually hate capitalism. What they hate is being at the bottom of capitalism.

Very different.

Nobody is protesting saying: “Please reduce my salary.”
“Please make my phone slower.”
“Please cancel online banking.”
“Please remove air conditioning.”
“Please make life less convenient.”

No, no. People want the convenience, the technology, the comfort, the lifestyle — they just don’t want the inequality, the stress, the competition, the cost of living, the boss, the rent, the bills, the pressure.

In other words, people don’t hate the game.
They hate that they are not winning the game.

Capitalism is like a gym. Some people get very fit. Some people get injured. Some people don’t go at all but still complain about the gym membership fee.

But here’s where it gets really funny. The loudest anti-capitalist voices online often have:

  • Monetized YouTube channels
  • Sponsored posts
  • Patreon accounts
  • Merchandise
  • Affiliate links
  • Online courses
  • Paid newsletters

They are not outside the system.
They are running a small business inside the system explaining why the system is bad.

This is like opening a restaurant to tell people not to eat at restaurants.

Again, the issue is not whether capitalism is good or bad. The issue is intellectual honesty.

If you truly want to reject capitalism, you must reject:

  • Consumerism
  • Convenience
  • Corporate platforms
  • Mass production
  • Cheap electronics
  • Fast fashion
  • Food delivery apps
  • Online shopping
  • Streaming services

You cannot say: “Capitalism is evil!”

Then when Shopee got 11.11 sale: “Add to cart, add to cart, add to cart.”

You are not anti-capitalist. You are pro-discount.

The truth is, modern society has made us all very dependent on systems we claim to hate. We criticize big corporations while using their platforms. We complain about billionaires while using products built by billionaires. We say “the system is broken” using tools created by the system.

We are like fish complaining about water.

But the deeper issue here is not capitalism. It’s human nature.

Humans have a special talent: We want the benefits.
We don’t want the costs.
We want the rewards.
We don’t want the risks.
We want convenience.
We don’t want responsibility.
We want success.
We don’t want struggle.

So we protest the system, but we also refresh the system, update the system, and queue overnight to buy the system’s newest product.

The real uncomfortable question is not: “Is capitalism good or bad?”

The real uncomfortable question is: “If you were the one making millions from the system, would you still be protesting it — or would you be giving a motivational talk about hard work and mindset?”

That question usually makes people very quiet.

Because sometimes, the problem is not the system.

Sometimes, the problem is that everyone wants to be the winner, but not everyone can be.

And that is a very difficult thing for human ego to accept — even if you post about it using your brand new iPhone.
